Tibet’s Travel Season at a glance

Spring (March-May): March in Tibet still feels like winter; it's windy and snowy. May is more suitable for longer journeys and outdoor activities. Kailash is open in late May after the winter closure.

Summer (June-August): Summer is a great time to visit Tibet; the weather is warmer, and it is a busy tourist season. However, the rainy season starts in late June and lasts until September; rain and clouds can affect mountain views, especially in July and August. Rainfall in Kailash often means snowfall, which could block Kora trekking for several days.

Autumn(September–October): Autumn is a great choice for sightseeing and photography tours with crisp air, and there are good changes to clear views of the landscape. Nights and mornings will get colder as the season progresses toward Winter.

Mount Kailash gets close in late October. Until May of next year for colder.

Winter (November–February): Few tourists visit. It is quiet, cold, and often sunny and dry in central Tibet. Snow, cold, and road closures may affect journeys to remote, high-altitude areas. Everest Base Camp is still accessible in the wintertime.

For most international visitors, May is best. September and October are also great, offering a good balance of sightseeing conditions and scenery. Weather can vary by elevation and region. It can be tropical hot in Lhasa while it snows heavily at Mount Kailash. Lhasa, Nyingchi, Namtso, Kailash, and Everest Basecamp have different climates.

Monthly guide to visiting Tibet

January

January in Tibet is cold and quiet, especially after sunset and at higher elevations. It is suitable to travel to Areas in the low plains of Tibet, like the Lhasa Kyichu River valley and Yarlung Valley. Traveling to remote lakes like Yamdrok Lake and Namtso Lake, and to remote areas like Mount Everest Base Camp, can be challenging but is accessible.

Best for: Visitors seeking a peaceful time in Tibet, with a focus on Lhasa, Tsedang, and Shigatse.

Consider: packing multiple layers of winter clothing, including very warm layers, and keeping your itinerary flexible.

February

January and February remain as cold as in January. Tibetan New Year, or Losar, makes it a special time for cultural experiences. This year, Losar falls on 7th February 2027. During Tibetan New Year, restaurants and hotels in Tibet are closed. There, you might need to pack enough food for the entire day when you're outside Lhasa.

Best for: Visitors interested in the winter atmosphere and cultural traditions. Tibetan New Year is the major highlight of traveling to Tibet this month.

Consider: Book early to secure a permit if you are coming to Lhasa to see the Tibetan New Year festival.

March

March has been closed to international travel since 2008, yet until the last few months, Tibet has remained open to international visitors. It is a transition month from winter to spring. But at high-altitude places and lakes, it will feel like winter. The end of March is usually peach blossom time in Kongpo. Snow is likely, as this month brings moisture from the Indian subcontinent.

Best for: visiting Kongpo scenery and enjoying peach blossoms. Other regions of Tibet are accessible.

Consider: Make sure your Tibet Travel Permit is issued without issues.

April

Longer, milder days start in April, though nights and mornings remain cold, and high mountain passes and Mount Everest Base Camp may still face winter conditions. It is a rewarding month for sightseeing, with fewer travelers than in peak summer. Mount Kailash Kora trekking will open for all travelers at the end of April.

Best for: Cultural tours in central Tibet and early-season landscape photography tour to Mount Everest Base Camp.

Consider: Confirm access to high-altitude destinations like Mount Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash. From time to time, the market will circulate rumors about closures and openings; please verify them with us.

May

May is the best time to visit Tibet. Days are generally more comfortable than in early spring, and many travelers combine Lhasa with Central Tibet, Everest Base Camp,p, and further overland into Nepal. But in 2027, the overland journey isn't promising, as the 2026 Kyirong Landslide washed away the land border port of Kyirong. High-altitude destinations can still be cold, especially at night.

Best for: Sightseeing, photography, spiritual tour to Kailash, and trips that include multiple regions in Tibet.

Consider: If you visit Kailash in May, snowfall may close the Kailash Kora for a few days while they clear the path. You may want to pack spikes to wear under your trekking shoes. Other areas of Tibet usually have good weather, and June's one of the best times to visit.

June

In June, days are longer and warmer, and all routes are more accessible than in winter. Weather still depends on elevation and region, but the views of the landscape and mountains are 100% guaranteed. Summer doesn't remove the effects of high altitude, so acclimatize gradually no matter when you travel.

In 2027, the month-long religious festival of Saga Dawa starts on 5th June; different monasteries have their own cham dance (Ritual dance) on different days. The main festival, the 15th full moon day, falls on 18th of June.

Best for: June is best for longer tours in Tibet, including Kailash tours, overland tours from Shangri-La and Chengdu to Lhasa, and the Great Northern Tibet Route, with its longer days and more accessible routes than in winter. It is also a great time for outdoor activities in Tibet, including camping, multi-day trekking tours, and one-day hikes.

Consider: If you plan to visit Kailash Manasarovar this month, book well in advance to secure hotels in Darchen, Saga, and Dirapuk. If you are coming to Tibet to see the Saga Dawa festival, allow enough days in Tibet to acclimatize properly before the festival.

July

July is the beginning of the rainy season in Tibet. Rain can affect visibility and road conditions, especially in eastern Tibet and mountainous areas. It is peak season for summer vacation in Schools and educational institutions.

Best for: Travelers who value summer scenery and lively visitor areas.

Consider: Allow extra time in your itinerary for weather-related changes.

August

August is a busy summer month. It is a good time for witnessing Tibet’s Culture with its Shoton Festival, where you can see Tibetan opera performances in Norbulingka and observe the Lhasa Shoton Festival this month.  The festival falls on the 1st Day of the 7th Month on the Tibetan calendar, which is on 1st Septmber 2027.

Best for: travelers who prefer warmer conditions and a festival-focused visit to Tibet

Consider: adding a few days in Lhasa before the festival to acclimatize before the festival.

September

This month is popular for sightseeing and photography tours. With the end of summer rains, this month offers crisp mountain scenery. Mornings and evenings get colder, especially at high-altitude overnight stops outside Lhasa.

Best for: travelers looking for clearer mountain views after the rainy season.

Consider: bring warmer layers for high-altitude areas like Kailash and Everest Base Camp, as well as early mornings and nights.

October

The rainy season usually ends in October, and it is beginning to get colder. The first week of October is usually a busy travel season, as it is the National Day holiday week; guides, transportation, and hotels can be in high demand. But in the second half of the month, temperatures drop, and high-altitude weather can become less predictable. Kailash closes for winter at the end of October.

Best for: Autumn is a good time for photography and regular sightseeing tours, as the rainy season ends.

Consider: If you travel to the Kailash region, be aware of unseasonal snowfalls, which could leave you stuck in Darchen for multiple days.

November

November is considered an off-season, and fewer travelers visit Tibet. The Kailash region will be closed during winter. Lhasa, Everest base camp, and other regions of Tibet will be accessible. Despite the cold weather, November is a great time to visit Tibet for regular cultural and spiritual tours.

Best for: A quieter centtral tibet and monastery visits.

Consider: Pack for winter; wear multiple layers on your upper and lower body.

December

December is not as cold as in most Northern Hemisphere cities. Travelers can experience a more peaceful atmosphere in central Tibet and Everest Base Camp. Yet snowfall can make the visit unpredictable and difficult to plan.

Best for: December suits travelers who want a quiet, central Tibet-focused trip rather than remote travel.

Consider: Accommodation with reliable heating and breakfast. As it is a low season, many hotels may reduce services.

Best time to visit Tibet by main attraction

Lhasa

Best time: The whole year is a very good time to visit Lhasa.

You can visit Monasteries, temples, and historical sites in Lhasa year-round. From May to June and September to October, you can add additional outdoor activities like multi-day trekking tours. In winter, Lhasa can offer a calmer city experience.

Everest Base Camp

Best time: January to June and October to December are the best travel months for clearer views.

Summer rains may reduce visibility on the Mountain. Mountain views can depend on weather and visibility and can't be guaranteed. In our experience, waiting longer at base camp can increase your chances of good visibility.

Mount Kailash

Best time: Mount Kailash is accessible only for 5 months a year, from May to October.

The most popular travel destination in Tibet, Kailash requires careful planning. Kailash is demanding at high altitude. Conditions and accessibility can change at any time, so check local guidance, keep your travel plan flexible, and keep a considerable amount for a backup plan.

Namtso Lake

Best time: Summer months, when the lake and surrounding highlands are more accessible.

Namtso Lake is at a very high elevation; it is very cold and windy in the winter, and the lake can freeze over. Access to Namtso Lake in the winter can be difficult. A one-day tour to Namtso Lake is an extremely long journey and includes a mandatory Eco-bus ride near the lake.

Nyingchi (Kongpo)

Best time: Late spring, when peach blossoms and fresh greenery bloom.

Kongpo is known as the Switzerland of Tibet for its greenery and forested landscape. The conditions differ from those in Central and Western Tibet. The region is known for its glaciers, lakes, and landscapes. The time for peach blossoms may differ each year.
